Fabric Weight and Drape: Reading Beyond Composition

Use swatches and garment samples to compare fabrics that share a composition but feel different in the finished style.

01

Give weight a context

Fabric weight is useful when comparing suitable candidates, but it does not describe the whole fabric. Ask for the weight and composition of each proposed sample and keep their references together.

02

Observe the drape

Handle a sufficiently large swatch and compare it with your reference garment. Weave, yarn and finish influence structure and movement, even when the fiber percentages are similar.

03

Check the garment result

Use a garment sample to review the intended silhouette. Record your approved material so a later quotation or production discussion refers to the same fabric.
